Perched on the dramatic clifftops of Salcombe Hill, the Norman Lockyer Observatory is one of East Devon’s most unique heritage landmarks.
Founded in 1912 by Sir Norman Lockyer, the world-renowned astronomer who co-discovered Helium, the site is a fascinating blend of Victorian engineering and modern exploration. Visitors can marvel at the magnificent historic telescopes housed in their original domes thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers of that keep it open for the public.
The Observatory is a key site for celebrating the Dark Skies of East Devon. Because it is located away from the heavy light pollution of major cities, it provides one of the best locations in the South West for observing deep-space objects, planets, and meteor showers.
